The region Uckermark-Barnim features three regional growth areas: Eberswalde, Oranienburg-Hennigsdorf-Velten and Schwedt.
The PCK refinery located in Schwedt/Oder is one of the largest in Germany. The big paper companies LEIPA GEORG LEINFELDER GMBH and BTS – Brandenburger Tapeten Schwedt GmbH annually process around one million tons of scrap paper (paper, card, packaging and wallpaper), making the town one of the largest centres of the paper industry in the country. Eberswalde is home not only to Kocks Ardelt GmbH, the world’s leading manufacturer of special-purpose cranes, but also to Finow Automotive GmbH, Hanke Gesellschaft für Gießerei-Kooperation mbH and Schmidt Maschinenbau GmbH, businesses that supply various automotive groups. Weber Automotive is another national automotive company which has established itself in the town of Bernau bei Berlin. Alstom is a global player in the rail vehicle industry located in the region as well as companies specialised in biotechnology, medical technology and pharmaceuticals.
The renewable energy industry (wind power, solar energy and biofuel) is also present in the northeast of Brandenburg, and makes the Uckermark-Barnim area a laboratory for new, regenerative energy sources. The scientific center is Brandenburg's "green University" - the University for sustainable development Eberswalde specialized in renewable energies, rural development and the timber industry.
