The whole area along the B5 axis has thus become the strongest growth region in the district. The Freight Village Berlin West (GVZ) with the two sub-areas of Wustermark and Brieselang is an economic powerhouse perfectly combining three modes of transport: In addition to a direct connection to the A 10 and the Bundesstrasse 5, the Freight Village Berlin West (GVZ) has its own port on the Havel Canal as well as its own railway container terminal.
Havelländische Eisenbahn AG (HVLE) is responsible for railway traffic technology operations as a connecting railway company. Former marshalling yard Wustermark, which is also to be merged with GVZ in the future under the management of Rail & Logistik Center Wustermark GmbH & Co. KG, a subsidiary of Havelländische Eisenbahn AG (HVLE), is an excellent location for rail logistics companies.
Yet Rathenow is not only a district town, but also forms the centre of the optical industry in Brandenburg. In 2015, Rathenow was crowned “Community of the Year” in the State of Brandenburg by the East German Savings Bank Association (Sparkassenverband OSV) for positive urban development in recent years.
The impressive combination of water, forests and nature reserves as well as picturesque landscapes shaped by the Havel – the river which gave this area its name – make up the unmistakable character of the Havelland district. Nature lovers will also get their money’s worth in the Westhavelland Nature Park, e.g. in the unspoilt Sielmanns Naturlandschaft Döberitzer Heide landscape just outside the gates of Berlin.
