Berlin-Brandenburg: the German Capital Region

Print page

German Capital Region - one of the most dynamic economic areas in Europe

Berlin and Brandenburg together form the German Capital Region and thus one of the most dynamic economic areas in Europe. Germany's Capital Region is large than Belgium and has, with around 6 million, more inhabitants than Denmark, Norway or Finland. Brandenburg as a land area and the federal capital of Berlin as a metropolis complement each other in an ideal way.

With its strong growing economy, the German Capital Region acts as the exciting hub of Europe thanks to its central position in the continent. All the growing markets in Europe are only a one-day truck drive away.

Skilled Workforce and High Productivity

The workforce in Berlin-Brandenburg is the most skilled in Germany. Some 240,000 students attend the region’s fifty universities and 100 institutes of technology. You can be sure of finding the skilled employees that your business needs among the almost 41,000 new graduates that enter the regional job market each year.

Brandenburg is the German region with the highest productivity increase since reunification. In the manufacturing industry, the gross value added per employee ballooned by around 862 % between 1991 and 2017. This rise in productivity primarily stems from the region’s modern capital assets. The degree of modernisation in Brandenburg’s production facilities is very high.

Berlin-Brandenburg has a long tradition as a science hub and boasts thirty-four Nobel Prize-winners. With 50,000 scientists, around 10 to 15 % of Germany’s scientific top flight is concentrated in the region.

The people of Berlin and Brandenburg have the business expertise and language skills that enable you to break into new markets. Nationals of more than 180 countries live in the German Capital Region. Most of them are highly skilled, motivated, flexible and ready to compete in international markets. Skilled employees for practically all industries are available in the Berlin-Brandenburg region.

Flexible Working Time

The standard working time is more flexible in the German Capital Region than in Western Germany. The yearly average i.e. in Brandenburg is 1.423 hours, ca. 69 hours more than the nationwide average.

State-of-the-art Infrastructure

Major trans-European routes cross the Berlin-Brandenburg region. State-of-the-art autobahns, railroads and waterways connect the German Capital Region with many destinations. And the new Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER) will improve the region’s connections to Eastern Europe and Asia.

Affordable Real-estate

You are sure to find an appropriate location for your business in the Berlin-Brandenburg region. Whether a modern office building, a user-friendly service facility, or a large-scale manufacturing plant – affordable properties of all kinds are available in the German Capital Region.

Tailored promotion - low taxes

Germany Capital Region offers the best financial support in Europe. It’s possible for investments to be funded up to a maximum of 35 % and even as much as 40 % in the border regions of Brandenburg. R&D projects are also successfully funded by attractive, tailor-made state and federal programmes. Companies can further benefit from funding measures provided by the Federal Government for the new federal states, which were formerly part of East Germany. At the same time, trade tax rates are extremely favourable in Brandenburg: the trade tax index is as low as 79% of the German average – the lowest any German federal state has to offer.

Optimum Quality of Life

A perfect mix of vibrant city life in the German capital and the fascination of its natural surroundings make Berlin and Brandenburg a unique place to work and enjoy life. You will feel at home here – and appreciate wonderful landscapes at your doorstep.

The German Capital Region offers a wide range of leisure activities: 7,000 kilometres of cycle tracks, another 2,000 kilometres of hiking trails, 22 golf courses, more than 600 equestrian centres, 200 tennis clubs, 19 adventure pools, wellness facilities, Europe’s longest inline skating track and Europe’s largest network of waterways, including more than 3,000 lakes.

Brandenburg also offers an outstanding cultural landscape that includes more than five hundred palaces, manors and century-old churches, four opera houses, more than two hundred theatres, about eight hundred museums and galleries, several world-famous symphony orchestras, and an extremely diverse club and music scene.

Taken all together, the Berlin-Brandenburg region is an exciting place to live and work.

What they said about Brandenburg:
“We made a very conscious decision to be in the region of the German capital, Brandenburg and Kleinmachnow, because the package fit globally: the market potential, support from the WFBB, proximity to political decisions in Berlin and the potential for a highly qualified workforce in a region which is attractive to employees Europe-wide.”
Thomas Koller, Founder and Director of enersis europe GmbH, at the opening of the Kleinmachnow site on 22/10/2015
