Film and TV in the German Capital Region

Print page

A strong location with global prestige

The German Capital Region has developed into a leading media location. The sector is considered one of the most dynamic branches of the economy in Berlin and Brandenburg. From films, TV and radio productions, to games, online and social media – the sector reaches far beyond the region in almost every segment.

Thanks to its excellent infrastructure, the region offers outstanding conditions for production and cooperation in the areas of TV and film. Each year, more than 300 internationally successful films are produced. Media professionals from all around the world benefit from the expertise of major traditional companies, such as Studio Babelsberg and UFA, and use the funding possibilities of the Berlin-Brandenburg Media Board based at the location, for instance. Furthermore, this is one of the leading television regions worldwide – with over 2,000 TV companies that turn over around one billion euros per year.

Studio Babelsberg, founded in 1912, is one of the oldest large-scale film studios in the world and the cradle of German cinema. Over 20 highly modern studios and media workshops are available to national and international crews. With the “Neue Berliner Strasse”, Studio Babelsberg offers one of the largest and most state-of-the-art outdoor sets in Europe for film, TV and advertising productions.

The outdoor set covers an area of more than 15,000 m² directly next to the film studios. Over the years, series and films like Babylon Berlin, Mute, Isle of Dogs, Jim Button and Luke the Engine Driver, The Monuments Men, Grand Budapest Hotel, The Hunger Games, Point Break, Steven Spielberg’s Bridge of Spies and the fifth season of Homeland were shot here. These productions have attained worldwide fame with their renowned casts and crews, countless accolades, Oscars and nominations.

National and international media professionals benefit from the expertise of traditional companies, like the UFA, as well as from the high density of service providers in (post-)production, technology, set building, special effects, costumes, accounting or casting.

Plus, the Economic Development Agency Brandenburg (WFBB) offers an extensive range of consulting, networks and funding with its partners. This ensures ideal conditions for start-ups as well as for establishing new media companies in Brandenburg.
